Guarnaschelli started her cooking journey earlier, when she was having her mother test recipes while editing cookbooks at home. She began her professional career under Larry Forgione before working in several restaurants, such as Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. She later became chief chef of Butter. Guarnaschelli took part in 2007's Farmers Market Battle, a segment of Food Network's Iron Chef America, where she took on Cat Cora. Guarnaschelli has since been one of the judges on the show and, in 2011, competed on The Next Iron Chef season four, where she finished third runner-up. Additionally, she participated on an episode of the Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast and was a loser. The fourth season ended and she became Geoffrey Zakarian's sous-chef. She became host of The Food Network's The Cooking Loft With Alex Guarnaschelli in 2008, on which she guides a tiny group of students in the best ways to cook classic meals.
